About Prosopo

Prosopo is an open source project dedicated to creating a community powerered bot detection network. Existing bot detection services are either privacy invasive or expensive. We aim to change that by creating a network of websites that can detect bots without compromising user privacy. The more websites that join the network, the more powerful the bot detection becomes.

Our approach to bot detection stems from traditional CAPTCHA systems, but with a twist. We collect as little information on the user as possible, with most detection being run in the browser. Cryptographic proofs are used to send the minimum amount of information to the server, and the server can verify the proof without needing to know anything about the user.

Prosopo started after receiving a grant from the Web3 Foundation. The Web3 Foundation is a Swiss foundation that nurtures and stewards technologies and applications in the fields of decentralized web software protocols. The foundation is dedicated to building an internet where users are in control of their own data, identity and destiny.
